Easy DIY Moss Ball Urns for the Front Entry
Does anyone else have a front entry that suffers from the winter blahs after Christmas? I always have my favorite green wreaths on the doors, but the porch just seems naked without some kind of plants or flowers in the urns. So, I decided to make some moss balls to add some life! And they were so quick and easy, anyone can do it!

I started with my empty urns, and went looking for just the right form to make the moss ball.
I didn’t want to spend a lot. I just needed a mound shape to start with, and this plastic bowl from the Dollar Tree turned out to be perfect! (And it’s thin enough to be cut if you need a smaller diameter. )
To build it up to the shape I wanted, I bunched up some plastic grocery bags, then covered them with burlap. You could also use large bubble wrap if you have that.
I used a little hot glue to hold the burlap in place, leaving a small opening to add more “stuffing” to get the size and shape I wanted.
Once that was done, I had the perfect form for the moss ball.
To cover the form, I used this sheet moss in a roll form…
I just cut it into wide strips and hot-glued it on to the burlap.
That got the majority of the form covered.
Then, to fill in the gaps and give it some more texture, I used some more moss. You can use different kinds of moss for this part, as long as you can pull it apart in portions.
Just glue it into the gaps and over the seams, and be sure use caution with the hot glue!
It may look a little odd when it’s finished, but when you place it in your container, it looks like you’re growing your own fresh moss! (No maintenance required!)
These were just what our winter porch needed for a more welcoming feel. And y’all, don’t be surprised if you still see these around come spring and summer!
Be sure to send me your pics if you try this! Please note, I would suggest using these only under a covered area, rather than fully exposed to the elements. The preserved moss is not meant to hold up to excessive rain.
