My DIY’d Fireplace Screen (for Under $30!)
The next time someone tries to tell you that God doesn’t care about home decorating, give them the link to my blog and tell them to talk to me. Okay-so maybe it’s not just the decorating…it’s that He cares about the things that matter to us. And here’s just one more reason how I know:
See my new fireplace screen? I love it. {Insert big sigh.}
If it looks familiar to you, that may be because it looks amazingly similar to this one I pinned from Horchow approximately 14.5 weeks ago. And since I’m just not the kind of girl to spend $495 on a fireplace screen, I’ve been waiting patiently for a 90% off sale that I knew deep down was never going to happen.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when God and I went walking into Ross and I spotted this little wall hanging for $20.99. I recognized it right away as a match to the fireplace screen I’d been dreaming of. It had to work. But the only problem is it didn’t have the legs and we don’t have a welder, so I actually let that little issue stop me from buying it that day.
But, of course I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I knew there had to be a way to fix it, but neither Dave nor I could think of one. Truthfully, it was one of those moments that made me miss my dad like crazy because I knew he would have an idea.
This is a good time to mention that it’s pretty much my parents’ fault that I think I can do anything I make up my mind to do. If I ask my mom if she thinks I can do this or that, she’ll say, “Oh, I’m sure you can, but don’t ask me how.”
When I would ask my dad, I’d say, “Dad, do you think I can do this?” And he’d say, “Of course you can.” And if I asked him for ideas, he always had one that would work.
But the thing about Heaven is, there’s no cell service. (Oh, how I wish there were!) So, I did the next best thing and called my brother. And it turns out that he takes after our dadbecause he had a great idea. He told me to get these brackets, paint them gold, and screw them on with metal screws… to which I said, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
So, I drove back to Ross, got the “thing”, picked up the brackets, came home, gave them a coat of my favorite Krylon gold (which was a perfect match), and then Dave screwed them on for me.
We screwed the “L” brackets on the back, and the flat braces on the bottom front to keep it stable. It worksperfectly.
No, not the exact replica of the original, but the $470 savings makes me just fine with that.
And this isn’t the first time God helped me decorate this room. If you’ve never read the story fromway back about the French sofa that we found on someone’s driveway, you should read that here. (Find the after pics here.) One of my all-time faves.
My one little problem now is that I’m just a tad bit torn betweenleaving it in the piano room or putting itin the family room…
It may just have to move around a little until I see whatplans God has for these rooms next.

Julie, way to go! Your screen looks so much like the one at Horchow. I'm thinking that really was meant to be.
I hope you'll come join us for Thoughts of Home on Thursday. 🙂

That is gorgeous! I so believe God cares even about the little things like fireplace screens! And rewards persistence and ingenuity. 🙂 Every time you talk about your Dad, it makes me tear up, and I say a prayer for you. I vote for keeping it in the piano room…I think it has more impact there. Or maybe you could find another one? Even better! 🙂

Truly your prayers were answered. Before you make a choice though I would call every Ross within 50 mile radius and see if they have another one. I don't have Ross in my area but I have been known to 10 or so Marshall's and Home Goods when I'm "hunting"……..

I agree completely! God cares about even the smallest details of our lives. He just blesses us to remind us to stay close and connected to Him! He is such a good good father!!!

OMG!! Don't you just love how you can save BIG money and make something else work and be even MORE happy with the outcome! That's what you have here! And re the other room – if Ross has another, I would buy it and either paint this one gold or different color. I have two of the same color of an indoor/outdoor rug in my home – one in the dining room and the other in our bedroom. Don't think any one notices. I do love and smile how God makes these things happen….and THANK HIM when they do happen out of no where. Perhaps that's your dad smiling down on you too! -)

This is a fantastic DIY! And you're right, God cares about what we care about 🙂 And isn't it so fun to see your dad still helping you out even though he isn't right beside you? God works in mysterious ways 🙂

Hello Mrs. Ryan,
My name is Emma Grant. I am currently attending Crown College. I happened to come upon your blog/INSTA/FB and I absolutely loved it. It was so neat to see what you are doing with this. I don't have INSTA or FB, but happened to see your post about Abby's paper she wrote on changing places with you, and how much she admired her father/your husband. And I just wanted to tell you how encouraging that was to me. The Christian home is fading with today's society, but God has stayed and blessed your familly with such a closeness and desire to love Him. You have clearly set a good example for your kids of what a Christ-honoring marraige, home, and family should be like. I just wanted to say Thank You. Thank You for the example and encouragement you have been.
Sincerely,
Emma Grant

Emma–thank you for taking the time to write this out as an encouragement to me 🙂 I'm glad you found me here and that it has encouraged you as well. You clearly have the desire for the same kind of future for yourself and your family, and I know God will bless that! Keep up your high standards and keep up your encouragement to others! That is a great ministry in itself 🙂

Love it. You gave me an idea. The screens I want are $200+. You’ve inspired me to buy one I’ve found at Target on clearance for 41.00. It’s a black square design and has a screen inset. I want white and no screen. No worries, I will spray paint white and remove the screen. The hard part will be how to remove the screen. Wish me luck. Thanks again for the inspiration.
