Staining With Paint
First of all, I need to preface this post by saying how sorry I am for the poor quality of these photos. My camera refused to cooperate with me for this project! However, I wanted to show you the little experiment I did on this petite library table. This little pedestal table with a leather (or faux leather) top was one of the items my girls & I found on our thrifting spree last weekend. (By the way, if anyone knows the actual name of this type of table, please let me know!) So, I picked it up as soon as I saw it because, as many of you know, one of the MANY projects I’m working on in this house is decorating our library. And the table was only $4. It was a no-brainer. It was in pretty good shape except that there were several nicks & scratches on the table top edge. Here are a few pics of the before condition (Again, sorry they’re a little blurry!): I didn’t want to paint this one because I didn’t want to change the original style with its stain. So, I experimented with using paint as a stain. In my craft paint collection, I found this reddish brown paint called Chocolate Bar & I mixed it using about 1 part paint to 2 parts water. Then, I just used a small paintbrush & kind-of washed over the whole edge of the table top. I went over it with several thin coats, noticing right away that it was doing a great job of covering all the little imperfections & also deepening the color a little more.

Cute and funky little table. It looks like it might be from the 40's? Nice cover up job with the paint/stain. Diana

What a cute table! I have a thing for pedestal tables, but have never seen one with a recessed top with leather like this one. Great deal too!
If you ever come across something larger with similar needs I'd recommend either Old English Furniture Polish. It has pigment in it to cover the scratches. There's also Restore a Finish which comes in different wood colors. It's a miracle working for things in pretty bad shape.
You're idea worked well for your table though. Great using what you have.

I've used a product called "restore a finish" by Howard that I bought at Home Depot. It comes in a rectangular can over by the minwax… Anyway you wipe it on and well… it restores the finish. It doesn't strip or anything, it just hides surface scratches kind of polishes and rehydrates the wood. I just discovered it recently and it has worked well for me. You might want to check it out for similar projects.
