Spiral Topiary
So, I guess I’ve got a Topiary Series going without even planning to. I just started covering things with moss one day and suddenly…well, I have a topiary addiction. And now, everywhere I shop I find myself browsing for urns & thinking of new shapes to create. And just when I think I have enough little topiary creations, I see Ballard or Pottery Barn group a bunch of them on one table & I think, “Oh, I need another one.” Don’t you love this?
{photo from Ballard Designs}Some of you are saying, “Enough, already!”, but there are a few of you who will admit that, like me, you’re thinking “Just one more little topiary won’t hurt anything.” (If you’re one of these types, you might want to see these others in my Topiary Series.)My latest one is this Spiral Topiary. I wasn’t sure if I loved it at first because it looks a little unnatural, but after I set it out in my kitchen, I really like it. And after all, it’s the nature of spiral topiaries to be a little unnatural. Here’s how I made mine: I started with some newspaper, a couple pieces of 18 gauge floral wire, and some tape. I also had chosen a stick from my yard & stood it up in my urn, secured with newspapers stuffed around it. Then, I laid out more newspaper, folded in half (as if you’re reading the front page) about 6 layers thick. Then, I placed the two wires in the center.

I have that same little urn on your counter, Julie! That's the one I did your instructions and made as a moss ball! Love the spiral one too, and Ballards always makes them look so nice in a grouping, don't they? I think I will leave well enough alone though!

OOhhh–that is really cool. Styrofoam is so costly, what a good idea to just skip it and use paper instead. SMART!

Genius to use newspaper, it looks great! I've never been into topiary but I just might have to try one now. They are cute, they remind me of Edward Scissor-hands or Disneyland. Thanks for stopping by peppertowne.com

lol I'm SO glad I'm not the only one obsessed with topiaries right now. In fact, I just made two the other day, and used the same Ballard photo as my inspiration. 😛 I love this spiral one. I might just have to add…just one more.

Okay, this is good really good. I was going to make some topiaries last weekend and went to buy styrofoam, really? Why is a cone shaped piece of styrofoam $9? I like your idea and will seriously try this. Good job!

I.LOVE.IT!! My sister posted about your bunny topiary and I saw it (and copied!) making one for my home! He makes me smile every time I see him…thanks for your creative ideas and sharing it with those of us who don't "see" how to do things, but are very good at "recreating" what we see!! 🙂

You are my topiary hero! I am addicted to making topiaries. There is something so whimsical about them. I am in awe of your spiral topiary. Wow! I am definitely going to give that a try.

I have searched for "DIY spiral topiary" but never seemed to find anything. Thank you so much for creating and sharing this great step-by-step project. (My husband actually saw me get up out of my office chair and jump up & down when I discovered this on your blog) I'm a bit obsessed with topiaries as well:)
