If you haven’t yet jumped on the “tassel bandwagon”, maybe this tutorial will change your mind. I love a good tassel & I think everyone needs at least one! For the past few weeks, I’ve been searching and searching for something I could use for a topper for a Spring tassel. I’ve seen some cute ones here & there in blogland, but I just couldn’t find the right thing I could use to make one for my house. I also wanted to be able to use it for a while after Easter, so I didn’t want to go with a bunny. Then, finally, it hit me! And this little tassel came to be. This is a super-easy project, great for a first-time tassel-maker. (This is only the second tassel I’ve made myself, so trust me, you can do it.) Here’s what you need: a mini terra cotta pot, a few miniature flowers (mine came from Hobby Lobby, of course), several colors of ribbon, a few inches of pom pom trim, and an empty thread spool.
The little pot will be the topper, obviously, so start by threading a thin ribbon through the hole in the bottom of the pot. (If your pot doesn’t have a pre-drilled hole, you can drill one with a small drill bit.) Tie a knot in the ribbon on the bottom of the pot. This will be your tassel’s “hanger”. These little pots usually come in packs of 4, so you can make a few of these OR use them to make a bunny or bird topiary. (Click here & here to find out how.)
Next, use your hot glue gun to glue a few flowers into your pot. Be careful to keep your hanging ribbon out of the way & centered.
Next, glue the empty thread spool to the bottom of the pot. This will serve as a foundation for your ribbons & trims. Some people use the wooden spools found in the wooden craft aisle at your favorite craft stores for this part. I have also used a couple of mini empty ribbon spools glued together.
The only thing left to do is add your ribbons. Choose whatever ribbons or trims you like in varying widths & patterns. The only rule is that you make it look the way you want it. I like to start at the top & work my way down, layering & looping, making sure to get the spool covered so it doesn’t show. And really, the more ribbons & trims you use, the better.
The last step is to cover the raw ribbon edges at the top by gluing on some pom pom trim or another ribbon, or both.
That’s it! These are great on doorknobs and cabinet knobs, even toilet paper holders. (Yes, that’s what I said. Click here to see my toilet paper tassel.) Where will you hang yours?
I'm on the band wagon and posted about tassels today too (got the Nester ebook a few weeks ago). Love your spring one, never thought to use the flower pots, and I clicked on your bathroom tassel link, wow, I love how you decorated your bathroom, and that ceiling!
This is just the cutest thing, I recently starting making tassels after seeing Marty @ A Stroll Thur Life tutorial on tassel making using a spool thread. Isn't it just so much fun. I love the flowerpot idea, very creative. If you have time come by my blog and see the Easter bunny tassel that I did. It is very simple but I really like how it turned out. Have a great week.
This is so cute! I've thought before that a miniature flower pot would make a good topper, but I had no idea how to go about making a tassel from one. Now I know! Thanks!
I only had time to click on two tassel's from the Nester's party and I'm so glad I picked yours–I needed a tutorial! I think I have all these supplies in my stash and I am going for it this weekend, maybe even tonight!
