Countdown to Valentine’s Day: Day 11!It’s Valentine’s Day, in case my recent posts haven’t driven that home yet. Something about this time of year just makes me want to add a little romance to everything. Even my wardrobe. And what’s more romantic than a classic rose pinned on your favorite shirt or jacket? Anthropologie has some cute little roses right now that come in a bunch of colors. I love this coral one:It’s not a bad deal for $18, but I like the sound of “free” better, so I decided to sew one myself out of some scrap silk fabric. It’s really easy! Here’s how to do it if your wardrobe is looking for romance, too.1.) Start with a strip of fabric that measures approximately 42″ long & 5 ” wide. I like silk, but this will work with almost anything. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, & press it flat with an iron.
2.) Next, take a needle & thread (at least the length of your fabric) & do a basic running stitch on the raw edge of the fabric. This doesn’t have to be perfect.
3.) When you have stitched all the way across, gently pull the thread to gather the fabric randomly in a few sections.
4.) Starting where you ended the stitched row, start rolling the fabric up to form the center of the rose, sewing through the entire roll a few times to hold it together.
5.) Continue loosely “rolling” the fabric up, stitching each layer to the one before to hold it all together. Be careful to keep the stitches concealed from the front view. When you have rolled it all up, fold the raw end back, so that it cannot be seen from the front & stitch it securely to the other layers.
6.) The last step is to sew on your pin to the back.
I told you it was easy! Granted, it’s not nearly as fun as going to Anthropologie & browsing around, but you can still have fun wearing it!
And because I got a little carried away with this project, I made an extra rose out of some leftover drapery fabric to give away to one of you. If you’d like to add this little blue & brown rose to your wardrobe, just leave me a comment below. If you don’t have a blog, be sure to leave an email address so I can contact you! Giveaway will close Sunday night (2/7) at midnight!
This is beautiful! I'm a huge fan of anthropologie and anything anthropologie-esque. Thanks for the chance! My fingers are crossed! june_spirit2628 at hotmail dot com
