Our Family Trip to Italy Itinerary: Rome
Here we are! It’s our last stop on a very fun and full trip around Italy. If you feel like it has been a lot to take in as we’ve re-capped the journey, you can start to feel what it was like to be there! So much to see and do and tell about. And if you have not caught up with where we’ve been so far, you can find those stops here…
For my 8th and final post on this trip, I’m taking you to Rome!
Rome was another must-see for us on this trip because it was one of the places we visited 8 years ago and the kids have talked about it ever since. Because they are 8 years older now and also because it was Beau’s first time, they wanted to do a lot of the main sites we did before and see them again from a new perspective, so that’s what we did!
We spent two days here this time, which was enough for us to see all we wanted. We found a very cute Airbnb in Rome that was super charming and adorably decorated and also so close to the Colosseum! Some of you may have seen this reel I posted with a little tour.
It was a little workout getting up the stairs each day (especially with luggage!) but it was worth it once we walked into the door.
This is tiny apartment living in its truest form, but it was fun for even the 7 of us for a trip like this.
Amazingly, there were 3 bedrooms and 3 baths…
And possibly the smallest shower I’ve ever seen!
But we loved staying here and would recommend it if this is your style of travel!
Having the windows open and peeking out into Rome in the morning and evening was so fun.
On our first day, we had arrived late morning, so we got out and got busy walking and touring. We took our time and casually strolled toward the Spanish Steps, catching so many beautiful glimpses of Rome along the way.
From there, we came to the Piazza Navona and the Fountain of the Four Rivers, which we were planning to see again the following day on our tour, so we just relaxed for a few minutes and kept going!
Just around the corner from the Piazza Navona was one of the girls’ favorite highlights of Rome. And that was the little art shop we stumbled into called the Gran Cafe Marcel. All I can say is, when you take some artists to Rome…
We were enamored by the tiny masterpieces but the true delight was the artist himself, Marcel. As much as the girls ooh and aahed over his work, I think he was even more overjoyed at the fact that they did.
He would tell the story behind his pieces and even play a special soundtrack for specific ones. He was such a treat and we highly recommend you finding his shop if you are visiting Rome!
After more sights, a little shopping, and more walking, we found dinner at a cute place near the Colosseum.
After dinner, we walked by the Mamertine Prison where the apostles Peter and Paul were believed to be held, which was so interesting, and we also saw this artist and his beautiful work.
The next day, we started 0ur day with breakfast right back at the Colosseum and then got picked up by our private tour!
Here is the one thing we highly recommend if you are traveling to Rome… spring for a private tour with this company! This is not a sponsored recommendation at all. This was our second time using them because of our amazing experience on our first trip, so we knew exactly what to do again. They pick you up in a nice van and drive you to the different sites, allowing you to get out and explore before taking you to the next stop. They will even get you in priority lines at the Colosseum, which was so busy this time it was so worth it. They will even allow you to customize your tour. This was nice before, traveling with the family and great again, traveling with Juliet.
Some highlights of the tour were of, course, Trevi Fountain…
The Mouth of Truth…
The Pantheon…
And much more!
We ended our tour back at the Colosseum, where we are able to join a priority line and get inside pretty quickly.
Our guide was very informative once again, and answered whatever questions we had.
From this point, our tour with her had ended, so we were free to explore whatever else we wanted for the rest of the day, so we hit some more of the places we had visited before that we loved, starting with taking a taxi to the Piazza del Popolo. We ate late lunch there in a great street side restaurant.
From there we took the steps to the park above so we could enjoy the view.
W also got gelato at the famous Giolitti and loved it!
After more shopping and exploring, we enjoyed our last dinner in Rome, laughing and reflecting on the favorite parts of the day and the trip!
One last photo shoot in front of the Colosseum and we ended another great day of the trip.
The next morning, we left Rome early and drove back up to Venice, arriving midday. We then took one last opportunity to enjoy Venice for the afternoon and evening before heading out to the airport the next morning for our flight home!
Two weeks in Italy totally wore us out, but also filled us up with some of the best times and sweetest memories to take home with us. I know that Italy is on the bucket list of so many of you who have mentioned it to us, and I hope you can make the plans and take the time to get there one day! I hope our recommendations help you in planning your own Italy adventure. We would love to go back again someday, but time will tell if that happens!
Thank you for coming along with us and being a part of all of this with us!
