DIY City Skyline Pillow

There’s no going back. I’m on the countdown I’ve been dreading for 18 years now. My son is actually leaving for college in a matter of days. {DAYS!} And maybe I’m in a tad bit of denial, but I’d rather just call it decorating therapy. I’ve been dealing with all this by re-decorating his room. Not like the moms who transform the kids’ rooms to a craft space or home gym. I’m actually decorating it for him. My goal is to make it awesome so he misses home even more.

I’ll show you how it looks in a few days when we get all the college packing finished, but one of the little projects I did was this city skyline pillow. It was super-simple and fun, too, so I’m sharing how I made it.

I started with some great neutral fabric that has a hint of shimmer running through it, some basic felt sheets, some piping for trim, and a zipper. (All supplies from Hobby Lobby.) I followed my basic instructions for this Easy Zippered Pillow, adding a basic piping. You could also add a skyline to a pre-made pillow cover if you choose!

You’ll also need Heat N Bond or a similar iron-on adhesive (find it here on Amazon). Following the directions on the package, iron this on to the back of the felt.

Then, find an image of the city skyline that you’d like to use, and print it off in the size you want to use as a pattern.

Then, using that pattern, cut the skyline from the felt, and then iron it onto the fabric that will become the pillow face.

If you want to add piping, do that next…

Then add the zipper and finish the pillow construction.

So simple, yet I think it’s just right in his room. Fingers crossed that my plan will work on him. Stay tuned for the room and the big trip to college. Am I going to survive this?
