I started making these chocolate leaves one fall over 10 years ago. And now they’ve become a little tradition around here that the kids (and I!) look forward to each year.

This was one of the first tutorials I ever shared on this blog, so I figured it was about time for an update.

Maybe you’ve made traditional chocolate leaves in molds like these, but once you see how easy these are to make, I think you’ll like this method even better!

There is only one ingredient you’ll need for these and that is: chocolate chips. And if you’re like me, you have those on hand at all times. Just pour a handful in a small bowl and melt in the microwave, 15 seconds at a time, stopping to stir in between.




When the chocolate is completely smooth, you’re ready to start. Tear off a large sheet of wax paper and lay it on a cookie sheet or the countertop.

To make each leaf, spoon a blob of chocolate about the size of a penny onto the wax paper. (Use more chocolate for a larger leaf.)

Then, drag the tip of a basic toothpick from the center of the blob to the top and then again from the center to the bottom so it looks like this…

Next, drag from the center in an upward curve to 3 points on each side, creating the shape of the leaf. Drag the tip once more from the top to bottom to deepen the center vein.

And that’s it! No two leaves ever turn out the same way, but that’s part of the fun!



Set the wax paper full of leaves onto a cookie sheet and place in the fridge to harden. I like to let some of them curve up on the edge of the pan so they come out as a curved leaf!



After about 30 minutes in the fridge, they’re ready to use!



They’re perfect on top of cakes, pies, cupcakes, or whatever else you like to make in the fall. Pumpkin muffins, topped with a little cream cheese icing and a leaf make the perfect take-along to parties!





And they look really cute in a cup of hot cocoa or a homemade pumpkin spice latte!



Make several extra to keep in the fridge for when you need them. Just leave them on the wax paper and seal them in a storage container until you’re ready to use them.
