How I Met My Sofa: A Love Story
Over the years, I’ve shared posts and stories of all kinds on this blog. Some of them are love stories… about the people and pieces that make this house our home. This is the story of how I met my new sofa and how I knew we were meant to be. A few of you heard the inside scoop in my Instagram stories a few weeks ago, but for those who missed it– sharing it here!
It starts back a few months ago when I started feeling like I was needing change. (As if all the monumental changes in our lives have not been enough in this family for the past couple years!) But I was specifically thinking of the living room this time. We have loved and enjoyed our curved white sectional for 7 years now and I was at the point that I wanted it to still have enough life left for another home somewhere, knowing we have had plenty of good use from it ourselves.
Pinterest and Instagram photos of green velvet sofas kept appearing in my scroll and I stopped to take them in every single time. And then there was just one that had my attention. I was falling for it and was starting to believe I could make a relationship with this one work in our own house!

I pictured all of us (okay makybe 4 or 5 of us) snuggled on the sofa, laughing at our favorite stories… Dave and I in the morning, sipping our coffee before the day starts… and very soon snuggling babies while we gather after family dinners.
Surely it was meant to be. But it would come at a cost. And lots of patience. Almost 5 months to be exact. And then what an investment to make for something so personal as my main sofa… and what if it wasn’t as perfect as I imagined when it came? Not to mention– all my safe neutral inclinations started to remind me there may be styling limitations on what I could do now.
And so I wavered back and forth, hoping Dave or someone would nudge me forward or else tell me to forget it. And then on a basic Thursday, I decided to walk into a local furniture store downtown that I hadn’t been in in awhile…just to see if they had anything that would make me forget about my major crush on the green velvet ONE.
In the window, there was a gorgeous teal velvet. Lovely legs and very similar style, but if only a few things were different about it. I chatted with a friendly girl who talked of hundreds of fabric choices which could make my dreams come true—for a few thousand dollars and 4 or 5 months, of course.
“But then,” said she, “maybe there’s this one you may be interested in… somewhere in the basement… if it hasn’t sold.”
My interest was piqued. Down the creeky stairs and around the corner we walked and there she was. The exact sofa. And in the exact velvet color I had dreamed of. It was almost like seeing your celebrity crush in person for the first time and not quite believing it after you’ve stalked them forever… or something like that.
She was there and I was there… also {awkwardly} the sales girl was still there. A spotlight from heaven (or maybe just the showroom) was shining directly on this green velvet beauty as a sign. And I knew this was God giving me the nudge I was waiting for. Here, now, for significantly less money, I could take her home.
To make a dramatically long story a tad shorter, here she is…
Comfy, cozy, right at home. And as a bonus– I got two fabulous chairs, about which I will spare you the flowery composition and simply state that they are perfect. And they swivel. Two more of a similar style are on order from another source and coming in early fall (fingers crossed).
I’m simply enthralled with the comfy down cushions, the firm quality fabric, and the overall design of this sofa.
This fabric is basically a magic show. It’s totally different and moody in different lights and angles and it is going to give me fits when trying to photograph it–I can already tell. But it’s the feisty ones that we fall for the hardest, right?
After much thought and with great suggestions given by so many of you on Instagram, I have decided we’ll call her Olive. As in “Olive us love her” as one friend cleverly said.

I’m looking forward to completing this living room look as the pieces present themselves and I’m excited about the stories that will unfold as they do. God knows I love a good story to go with my furnishings, and I’m reminded of how much He loves to surprise us with the little things every time these things happen. (Remember this one about my French sofa in the Piano Room from so long ago?) I love that so many of you all have your stories too and that you’re here following along with ours!

That is so beautiful! The green is wonderfully unique, and yet somehow neutral! I love it. I wonder if it would look even better if her front legs were on your rug? Congrats on the great sofa love affair!

It is perfect! Color is perfection, and not to mention is the long, solid cushion. I”m figuring out how to get one for me now.

I have never read a thing you have written until this…but it appeared on my Pinterest page and I just about fell over. I’m having a love affair with the same couch! It appeared about a year ago in a small boutique shop in my town. The minute I laid eyes on it, I knew we were meant to be. I loved the soft sage color. I loved the deep seat. Every time I am near the store, I go to visit “my couch.” I just can’t afford it right now….and am terrified that I never will be able to afford it. But I dream about it all the time. And I visit it often.

Your story makes me smile as I just had a similar one when it was time to change things up in my living room. Back in December I decided I needed a change from two cream colored sofas I have loved for 20 years. So I decided to look around viewing my options in color and fabrics, but didn’t know if I wanted a different style this time in cream knowing how easy it was to decorate around that color or chose something completely different. Then this one day I walked into this furniture store and there she was, my green beauty which turned out to be the same green style sofa you have, only in linen with a skirt. Actually it’s a tight fitting linen slip cover over a cream body. I absolutely love it!!! I looked at others in this place, but kept coming back to my green beauty! After ordering it, I was a little nervous with my decor surrounding the green sofa, however it’s absolutely beautiful, with that warm cozy feel, bringing in the outdoor look with my wood tones!! I love your chairs as well and how the lighting does give your room that moody feel. As I writing this, I’m still smiling, knowing how you felt!!
