Kids’ Basement Hangout Room Reveal!
Just in time for lots of friends and family to arrive for Thanksgiving, we have finished the new kids’ hangout room in the basement! And, like I always say each time we do a room makeover, it’s my new favorite! Until this makeover, we hadn’t done a lot to this space since we first moved in 9 years ago. Here is how it looked before the makeover…
And here it is now!
The theme of the room is our city of Knoxville, Tennessee. My favorite part is, of course the wall mural, which I am particularly proud of because it’s actually a photo taken by my brother who does drone photography. It is literally the ideal image I wanted for this space, with perfect colors and all! My brother has several great photos of Knoxville available, and he also does custom prints of all kinds from canvas and acrylic to wall murals. Contact me if you are interested in knowing more! This is the same mural material we used in our recent powder bath here and in Lily’s room here. It’s the perfect re-positional and removable material and my husband was able to put this one up in a couple hours.
The large gold “disco ball” is actually our city’s icon, the Sunsphere, which was built for the 1982 World’s Fair held here in Knoxville. I love the perspective of the photo and the impact it has on the room!

We ended up ordering this modular sectional and we love it!! We have it set up as a super-long sofa right now, but it can be re-configured several ways, including for extra sleeping space! It’s a perfect charcoal gray, and the units can be latched together to hold them in the position you want!
I also ordered these striped bean bag ottomans, and they are so fabulous! I wanted them for extra seating and lounging, and they are perfect! As you can see, they’re the same height as the sofa, and they are big enough to easily fit two kids on one of them! The coffee table is this one, which also turned out to be a perfect fit and style! It had tons of great reviews, and I will agree–a great quality and price point. The round side table was an unexpected find from Marshall’s, and it goes perfectly with the coffee table.
We kept the green console, which was a thrift store find that I painted years ago. It’s the perfect piece for storing all the movies and video games!
Remember this 865 pillow I made with this tutorial here? These numbers are popular around town because they are our area code! (They also spell the word “VOL” on a phone key pad!)
Another of my favorite elements in the room is this Knoxville marquee light we got in a local shop. It adds the perfect ambiance for movie night, plus it’s just right over the air hockey table!

On the opposite wall, we had a nice big blank space which was begging me for a chalkboard, so of course I had to!
I wanted this one to be framed out, so I taped off the area I wanted the chalkboard to be with blue painter’s tape.
Then, I rolled on a couple of good coats of chalkboard paint, letting it dry overnight in between coats.
To make the frame, we bought basic unfinished wood from the hardware store, my husband mitered the ends, and I stained them with just one quick coat of Minwax Dark Walnut.
Then, my husband installed the frame by screwing the pieces into place with dark gray drywall screws.
And that was it!
…Because it’s always a good time for a little chalkboard art!
The other half of this room is our craft space, still with the black and white striped curtains I made years ago because I still love black and white stripes!
So, now that this space is done, we’re ready for plenty of fun times here with lots of friends and family.
By the way, did you notice how the treadmill completely disappeared from view now that the wall mural is up? Bonus!!
I hope you like it! If you have other questions, let me know and I’ll be happy to answer!

Fantastic. May I ask Where did the word art about Sunsphere come from? We are in Knoxville as well.
