13 Must-Haves Every Beginning Crafter Will Love!
It’s true that the majority of my readers are girly and crafty, but I do have a few manly men that stop by now and then. And when one of them recently asked me for ideas for a beginner’s craft kit for his Valentine, I thought it was a good time to share some of my faves.
Most of these items can be found at a local craft store, such as Hobby Lobby or Joann, but for you last-minute shoppers who would rather shop via Amazon Prime, I’m sharing the quick links below:
1. Hot glue gun. Every crafter needs one! It doesn’t need to be fancy. I’ve had mine for years now & it still works fine. Don’t forget some hot glue sticks as well!
2. The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering. For anyone wanting to learn more about the ever-popular art of chalking, this is the book for you! I’ve mentioned it before and I can’t say enough how much I love it! And of course, you’ll need the chalkboard and chalk to go with it!
3. A Sketch Book. I love this particular one because it’s a gorgeous red! But a good sketch book is a great idea for anyone wanting to practice sketches or hand-lettering.
4. Micron Pens. Along with the sketch book, you’ll need some good pens. I’ve used this Micron brand for years for different projects, and I love this set because of the variety of sizes. A great starter set!
5. A good pair of scissors. I have several pairs of scissors for my paper projects, but I keep one good pair of dress-making scissors that I only use for fabric. You can find good scissors in a variety of brands and styles, but I’m particularly partial to this gold pair because they’re both functional and chic!
6. Paint brushes. There’s no need to buy an expensive set of brushes for basic crafting needs. You just want to have a good variety of sizes, and this set is a good choice.
7. Colored Cardstock. Every crafter needs some good paper for everything from party decor to card-making or even wall art. The possibilities are endless and these colors are perfecto.
8. A Sewing Machine. I couldn’t make a list like this without including this. It may not be the most romantic gift my husband ever gave me, but it’s definitely the most functional. (Mine is 20 years old and still going strong.) A luxury model with all the bells and whistles may be nice, but a basic one like this one gets the job done just fine.
9. A Paper Trimmer. This is another great tool that makes life easier for paper crafting of all sorts. It’s another tool that I’ve had forever and still works great. Extra blades can be switched out as needed.
10. Craft Paints. These come in a blue million colors and brands, but here’s a brand I like that I’ve used for everything from painting on canvas to painting on fabric and rugs! And this is a great price as well.
11. White Gelly Roll Pens. These are my faves for writing on black cardstock for the chalkboard look that I love for paper projects and cards. I’ve used them for years and I always keep them in my supply.
12. A Good Set of Sharpies. These are some classics that every crafter should keep in their supply for lettering or labeling. And this set has a great variety of colors.
13. 2-inch Circle Punch. This punch is perfect for all kinds of crafting. I use mine for garlands, tags, cards, and more. And this is the size you need for almost all my free party printables as well.
I could go on and on with this list, but this is a great start. Don’t forget to add a little box of chocolates if you’re getting this for your Valentine, because chocolate is well-known to spark creativity. Yep, everybody knows that.
I hope this helps you out! Order right away to get them in time for the big day. And girls, be sure to share this link with that Valentine of yours who may need a few helpful hints!

This is a great list which I am pinning. I'm not the craftiest person and sometimes it's because I don't have what I need. Putting Sharpies on my list because they are always fun!

Great list! I finally picked up a glue gun myself last night since I knew I had projects that needed it!
