DIY Metal Frame with Bottle Cap Magnets
Some of my most popular projects on the blog have been the ones I’ve done with sheet metal. Remember my metal top coffee table? I’m still using it and loving it on my screened porch. And the magnetic chalkboard I made for Lily? Still popular on Pinterest and with Lily. And even my little galvanized metal tray is still getting a lot of use around my house.
It’s so much fun to work with, I decided to get out the tin snips again and make a magnetic frame for a gift for my husband.
I found the perfect box frame to start with at Hobby Lobby for only $2.50 on the 90% off clearance aisle. Remember the last time I scored big on frames? Pretty much any frame you want will work.
Then, I cut my sheet metal to fit the frame. I had some left over from my previous projects, but remember you can buy a big sheet at Home Depot in the plumbing section for around $10 and it looks like this…
Don’t forget to use caution when cutting sheet metal. Always use work gloves because the edges are very sharp and can cut you badly.
You want to cut the metal with tin snips to a precise measurement so that the metal fits snugly in the frame.
You can check the fit and trim if necessary.
You may decide to keep the metal bare in the frame, which would look great in many cases, but I decide to use some striped scrapbook paper for a little interest. So, I just cut the paper to same size as the metal and placed them in the frame.
A little hot glue around the edges on the back of the frame held it all in.
The magnets were almost too easy. The magnets, bottle caps, and bottle cap stickers can be found at Hobby Lobby or other craft stores and all you have to do is stick on a sticker and then stick a magnet on the back. Trust me, you can pretty much do this blindfolded with one hand tied behind your back while drinking a Frappuccino.
If you prefer not to buy the stickers, you could also print out and glue on your own designs.
Cute and easy. And makes a great gift! Hope you like it. I’m sharing it with a few of these crafters!
