“Neatly Askew” and Other Decorating Fantasies
You know the drill: the latest Pottery barn catalog arrives in the box, you browse through it, drool on a few of the pages, take a look around your family room, and think, “I can get this look. Just a little somethin’ here and a little somethin’ there…” And with a few little tweaks, you’ve got the place looking pretty good.
If you look at almost any Pottery Barn living room pic in their living room gallery, you’ll find a throw on the sofa… just “neatly askew”, as I like to call it.
Like this one here…
And here…
And here…
And here…
Love ’em. They’re perfect and cozy and begging for you to sit down with a cup of coffee, all curled up witha good movie.
And with the weather getting chilly and my living room needing some cozy color, I had to get me some throws.
And I found the perfect ones at Target for a great Target price. So, I brought them in and carefully arranged them, placing the turquoise cable knit “neatly askew” on the sofa and the mustard-colored houndstooth perfectly folded on the love seat.
They add the perfect pop of color and they’re functional.
They also coordinate perfectly with the throw I already had from World Market…
But just when I had it lookingpicture-perfect, I realized I’d forgotten something: People actually live here. And “neatly askew” doesn’t last too long in the real world. Instead, it’s more like “randomly disheveled” and “frumpy and dumpy”, like I found this room this morning.
So, thanks for the dreamy images, Pottery Barn. I know you mean well, but it’s just not realistic for a family of 6. And just for the record, I’m not buying the newspaper on the floor trickeither. It never looks that cute in my house.

Oh, I'm glad my couch isn't the only one that looks like that when the kids get finished with it. Why is it so hard for them to throw the pillows back on? Mmmmmm, that houndstooth throw….I haven't browsed Target lately. Must remedy that!

Lol! Too funny! I love the yellow one especially, and I REALLY love how the World Market one is so beautifully draped over the chair. 🙂

Ha! I LOVE that you staged some neatly askew photos of your own, and then the room got lived in! 😉 I totally agree about their newspaper on the floor trick, too. Never happen.
